Gas heaters: fast heat on demand
A gas heater raises water temperature quickly regardless of the outside air, which makes it the right answer for spas and for pools used occasionally in the cooler months.
The tradeoff is running cost. Gas is expensive per hour, so gas shines when you heat fast and infrequently rather than holding a temperature all season.
Heat pumps: cheap heat, slower
Heat pumps move heat out of the air instead of burning fuel, which makes them dramatically cheaper to operate. In our climate they work efficiently most of the year — the exception is a cold snap when air temperatures drop into the 50s and output falls off.
They heat slowly, typically a degree or two per hour, so they work best paired with a solid cover and a schedule rather than on-demand use.
