The signs to watch for
Interior finishes in Florida typically last 8 to 15 years depending on material and water chemistry. Long before total failure, the pool gives you warnings.
- Surface feels rough or chalky underfoot
- Stains that return within weeks of every acid treatment
- Visible plaster erosion exposing the gray shell beneath
- Spider cracks spreading across the floor or walls
- Waterline tile falling off or grout washing out
- Water loss beyond normal evaporation
- Chemical demand climbing for no obvious reason
Choosing a finish
Standard marcite is the least expensive but the shortest lived. Quartz finishes add durability and color depth for a modest premium. Pebble finishes cost the most up front and routinely outlast everything else, which is why they dominate high-end SWFL remodels.
What a remodel involves
Draining, chipping out the old surface, replacing waterline tile and coping, applying the new finish, then a careful startup and brushing schedule for the first two weeks. Most residential projects run one to three weeks depending on scope and inspection timing.
Since the pool is already empty, it is also the cheapest moment to add LED lighting, upgrade plumbing, or modernize the equipment pad.
